Bedtime Bible Stories for 4-Year-Olds (and Up to 8)

At four, a bedtime story has to do three things: be short enough to finish, calm enough to end the day, and simple enough that your child can follow every word. Little Light Stories books are written exactly for that: about three minutes of reading, big easy-to-read text on the left page, a full-page illustration on the right, and a little animal friend who asks your child a question or two along the way. Here are the stories we would start with.

Five tips for bedtime Bible stories with a 4-year-old

Keep it short. One story a night is plenty. Three minutes of full attention beats ten minutes of wriggling.

Let them answer the questions. In every Little Light Stories book, the little animal friend asks your child something. Pause and wait. The answers are often the best part of the evening.

Same story, again and again. Repetition is how four-year-olds learn. If they ask for Noah for the tenth night in a row, that is a good sign.

End with the verse. Each book closes with one short verse to remember. Say it together, then lights out.

Read on a tablet if you must, but dim it. Our digital editions look beautiful on an iPad. Turn the brightness down and use night mode, or choose the hardcover for screen-free evenings.
